Relationship Between Brain and Gut #
You may have heard that there’s a relationship between your brain and your gut. This is one of the craziest things that I’ve learned as a neuroscientist. So let’s get started! You have bacteria living inside of you, bacteria in your gut is called your microbiome and somehow it has a role in your brain function. In this scientific paper they took the microbiome from human beings with autism and put it into the gut of mice and they found that it made the mice less social. So how is this happening? I mean obviously autism spectrum disorder involves your brain it’s a neurodevelopmental disorder. This is really complicated but what it shows is that when they put the microbiome into the gut of these mice, those mice started to show changes in their brain which resembled the changes seen in autism. What this is wild but get this, it’s also been shown that if you take the microbiome from someone who doesn’t have autism and transplant it into someone who does have autism it not only improves gut health but also can help with several behavioural symptoms of autism for as long as two years. This is amazing research and it’s totally perplexing to me. Be sure to follow for more amazing neuroscience.
